Diabetes And Other Non Communicable Diseases Sciences Essays Diabetes And Other Non Communicable Diseases Sciences Essay Diabetes And Other Non Communicable Diseases Sciences Essay Today, diabetes and other non catching diseases ( NCDs ) that portion the same hazard factors represent a taking menace to wellness and human development. An estimated 8 to 14 million people die prematurely every twelvemonth in developing states due to preventable NCDs chiefly cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, malignant neoplastic diseases, and chronic respiratory diseases. These people are deceasing excessively immature as a consequence of increased exposure to the common hazard factors for NCDs: unhealthy diets, physical inaction, baccy usage and the harmful usage of alcohol. ( WHO ) . Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus consequences from insulin opposition, a status in which cells fail to utilize insulin decently, sometimes combined with absolute insulin deficiency. ( Wikipedia ) . Diabetes is recognized as a group of heterogenous upsets with the common elements of hyperglycaemia and glucose intolerance, due to insulin lack, impaired effectivity of insulin action, or both ( IDF ) . Epidemiology of T2DM Diabetess mellitus is one of the most common hormone upsets impacting about 6 % of the universe s population. [ 1 ] Etiology of Diabetes mellitus The causes of diabetes mellitus are incompletely understood. It has now been widely accepted that the cause of diabetes mellitus is multifactorial and that both familial and environmental factors play a conducive function. [ 1 ] Asiatic populations are multiracial and have multi factorial causes of type 2 diabetes. The mechanisms implicit in development of the disease are complex and varied, even within these populations. The major aetiologic constituents of type 2 diabetes are impaired insulin secernment and impaired insulin action, which are aggravated by the presence and grade of glucotoxicity. Both constituents might besides be genetically predetermined. [ 2 ] Definition of T2DM The definition of diabetes may be given in different footings but the significance of the definitions is the same, as diabetes has become an endemic Non catching disease non merely in developed states but besides increasing prevalence in developing states. This displacement in the from traditional Healthy diets to western The Indian nutrient points are usually rich in fats and the method of the readying of a individual nutrient point differs from one individual to the other. The street nutrient peddling units and the wont of eating outside the place has mostly affected the normal nutrient forms in India. The street nutrients which include get downing from breakfast point like vada, poori etc has increased ingestion in the Indian population to the tiffin points and flushing bites which include mirch bajji, aloo bonda and confab bhandar nutrients has increased ingestion due to miss of clip to fix clip at place households are largely depending on the nutrient available outside the place . ( besides the Indian fast nutrient is bad: think of Vada-Pav ) fast nutrient diets, deficiency of regular physical activity, unable to keep a normal organic structure weight and increasing usage of baccy both in work forces and adult females are the nucleus causes for diabetes happening. I truly can non notice on this statement as I read it in one of the below listed articles ( Do you truly believe so? ! Where have you read this? Not right ) . Ethnicities Harmonizing to the Journal article of Nepal Medical Association by Battarai MD [ 3 ] , Ethnicity is considered to be an of import factor in diabetes development with higher rates being reported in Asians, Hispanics, African Americans and autochthonal peoples of the USA, Canada, Australia and Pacific parts ( IDF ) . However the term ethnicity appears to transport the impression of prevailing familial component, which we can non alter. With increasing fleshiness, diminishing physical activity, and lifting life anticipation of population, prevalence of diabetes additions. Prevalence of diagnosed diabetes in the USA increased increasingly from 0.9 % in 1958 to 5.9 % in 2006. Beginning: Center for disease control and prevention The universe broad statistics of diabetes from different cited articles suggests that, In Canada age adjusted addition in prevalence was from 4.4 % in 1986 to 6.6 % in 1991.11 Similarly in Iceland the prevalence in males was 2.8 % in 1970-1972, 4.5 % in 1979-1984 and 5.0 % in 1985-1990. The comparative diabetes prevalence estimations for 2007 in North America and Europe are about 4-9 % . ( IDF ) . In the USA there is progressive addition in fleshiness and an estimated 66 % of grownups were fleshy or corpulent in 2003-2004. ( NCHS ) . Similar rise in fleshiness was seen in Europe. ( WHO ) The grownup average organic structure mass index ( BMI ) degrees of 20-23 kg/m2 were found among the general population in Africa and Asia, while degrees were 25-27 kg/m2 across North America and Europe in 2002. The proportion of entire estimated figure of people with diabetes in 2007 in 20-39, 40-59 and 60-79 age groups are 7-10 % , 36-45 % , and 46-57 % in European and North American parts severall y and 23-33 % , 42-52 % and 25-30 % in African, South-East Asian and Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East parts severally. ( Bhattarai MD ) Prevalence of diabetes among grownups above 20 old ages in urban India was about 1 % in 1960 which increased steeply making to about 12 % by 2005. Similarly, analysis of old tendencies of age adjusted prevalence rates of diabetes in different urban countries reveals 7.7 % in 1990 and 8.9 % in 1995 in Hong Kong, 8.1 % in 1993 in Singapore and 11 % in 1995 in Taiwan ; 4 5 % in 1994 in urban Sri Lanka, 9.7 % in 2004 in urban Cambodia and 4.5 % in 1997 and 8.1 % in 2005 in Dhaka 9.5 % in Latinos and 13.3 % in Africans in 2005 in the USA and 15.2 % in Bahrain and Qatar and 19.4 % in the United Arab Emirates in 2007 ( Bhattarai MD ) GENETICS OF T2DM Type 2 diabetes is a disease characterized by impaired b-cell secernment of insulin, in combination with opposition to insulin in its mark tissues. Both insulin secernment and insulin sensitiveness are influenced by familial and environmental factors. [ 4 ] Although monogenic signifiers of diabetes have been found ( Table 1 ) [ 5 ] , the bulk of instances of type 2 diabetes do non demo heritage as a Mendelian trait, but instead as a genetically complex upset in which familial discrepancies predispose persons to develop the disease. The environmental factors, such as extra nutrient and limited physical activity. The rapid rise in diabetes prevalence over the last few decennaries strongly suggests that familial discrepancies involved in type 2 diabetes are interacting with environmental factors. The strongest extra campaigners for this list include the E23K discrepancy of KCNJ11 and the P12A discrepancy of PPARG. Both of these associations have been replicated in several samples, and the cumulative grounds has long surpassed genome-wide significance. The past two old ages have witnessed an acceleration in our apprehension of both monogenic and multi factorial signifiers of diabetes. There are really strong evidences for believing that the following moving ridge of fresh diabetes-susceptibility discrepancies will flux from the genome-wide association surveies that are presently underway. As with TCF7L2, we can anticipate these to present important new penetrations into the pathogenesis of T2D and the allelomorphic architecture of complex traits in general. [ 6 ] Genome-Wide Association Studies ( GWAS ) Recent progresss in genotyping techniques and the aggregation of big, type 2 diab etes patient cohorts have made it possible to execute hypothesis-free genome-wide association surveies ( GWAS ) to place common familial discrepancies that increase susceptibleness to type 2 diabetes. It has been estimated that, in a Caucasic population, measuring 500,000 SNPs will observe around 80 % of the common familial fluctuation. The genome-wide attack has been really successful for type 2 diabetes, taking to the designation of over a twelve common familial discrepancies associated with the disease lying near cistrons that had non antecedently been associated with a diabetic phenotype. [ 4 ] WC Cut-offs for Asiatic Indians: Action level 1: Work force: 78 centimeter, adult females: 72 centimeter. Any individual with WC above these degrees should avoid deriving weight and maintain physical activity to avoid geting any of the cardiovascular hazard factor. These action degree 1 cut-offs demand to be researched farther. Action level 2: Work force: 90 centimeter, adult females: 80 centimeter. Capable with WC above this should seek medical aid so that obesity-related hazard factors could be investigated and managed. [ 7 ] Diet and T2DM Dietary fat and insulin opposition Dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids ( PUFAs ) :An impressive organic structure of grounds has established the nexus between dietetic lipoids, membrane lipoids and insulin opposition in carnal surveies. Overall, surveies have shown that dietetic? -3 PUFAs addition EPA and DHA content of phospholipids membrane, better lipoid profile and have either a good or no consequence on insulin sensitiveness. Dietary saturated fatty acids ( SFAs ) :Intake of SFAs is a important independent forecaster of fasting and postprandial insulin concentrations. Overall consumption of dietetic SFAs is positively related to insulin opposition. Replacing SFAs with MUFAs or PUFAs in dietetic fat may be a utile dietetic intercession to forestall metabolic impairment. Dietary glandular fever unsaturated fatty acids ( MUFAs ) :Overall, high MUFAs diets have shown good consequence in direction of T2DM but its influence on insulin opposition, although appears good, is still inconclusive. Dietary trans fatty acids ( TFAs ) :Dietary TFAs consumption has been found to be associated with dyslipidaemia and addition hazard of T2DM and CVD, but the relationship between dietetic TFAs and insulin opposition has been ill investigated. Overall, limited informations suggest that dietetic TFAs consumption, although associated with dyslipidaemia and addition hazard of T2DM and CVD, may non impact insulin sensitiveness particularly in healthy persons. Conjugated linoleic acid ( CLA ) :CLA is a mixture of positional and geometric isomers of LA ( 18:2n-6 ) normally found in beef, lamb and dairy merchandises. Overall, limited informations suggest that dietetic TFAs consumption, although associated with dyslipidaemia and addition hazard of T2DM and CVD, may non impact insulin sensitiveness particularly in healthy persons. Dietary saccharide consumption and insulin opposition Sucrose/fructose:high sucrose/fructose diet additions organic structure weight and hazard for T2DM and its influence on insulin sensitiveness, although appears hurtful, is still inconclusive. Low glycaemic index nutrients:Prospective surveies have shown that ingestion of low dietetic GI nutrients is associated with a lower hazard of T2DM, proposing a preventative function of low GI diets. [ 8 ] . A low GI diet improves blood glucose control as manifested by lowered day-long glycaemia, lowered glycosylated haemoglobin concentration and improved glucose tolerance. A retrospective meta analysis of randomized controlled clinical tests comparing low and high GI diets in the intervention of T1DM and T2DM. They found that low GI diets globally reduced HbA1C by 0.43 per cent points compared to high GI diets in surveies with both T1DM and T2DM topics. [ 9 ] Whole grain consumption:In drumhead, whole grain consumption is associated with lower prevalence of the metabolic syndrome, BMI values, entire cholesterin, and LDL-C degrees and improves insulin sensitiveness. Asiatic Indians in India consume comparatively more saccharides ( ~60-67 % of the energy consumption ) as compared to the migratory Asiatic Indians in UK ( ~46 % of the energy consumption ) and USA ( ~56-58 % of the energy consumption ) . Sevak et Al found that carbohydrate consumption ( as a per centum of entire energy ) was reciprocally correlated with insulin sensitiveness ( i.e. , entire saccharide and sucrose were positively correlated with insulin opposition ) , with a stronger correlativity for sucrose than for amylum. The same form was seen for fasting insulin, but the correlativity was weaker [ 10 ] . Data suggest that dietetic? -3 PUFAs addition EPA and DHA content of phospholipids membrane, better lipoid profile and may hold good consequence on insulin opposition. Dietary SFAs consumption is positively associated with insulin opposition. Replacing dietetic SFAs with PUFAs or MUFAs can hold positive effects on insulin sensitiveness. High sucrose/fructose diet addition organ ic structure weight, and hazard for T2DM, and may hold hurtful consequence on insulin sensitiveness. Evidence suggests that high saccharide diets increase concentrations of plasma triglycerides and diminish HDL-C and LDL-C and do postprandial hyperinsulinaemia. However, it is still non clear from the available informations whether the clinical public-service corporation of increasing the fibre content or diminishing the GI of low-fat/high-carbohydrates diets is preferred to merely replacing saturated fat with unsaturated fat and diminishing saccharides intake to diminish insulin opposition. [ 10 ] Familial sensitivity, dietetic wonts, quickly altering life style, physical inaction and migration are conducive factors for high prevalence of insulin opposition in Asiatic Indians compared with white Caucasic and in-depth probes on these issues are required. Asiatic Indians and South Asians have higher consumptions of saccharide and? -6 PUFAs, lower consumptions of? -3 PUFAs and fi ber, and higher? -6/ ? 3 PUFAs ratio as compared to white Caucasians. Recently, our group has reported that dietetic? -6 PUFAs consumption is signifi cant independent forecasters of fasting hyperinsulinaemia in immature Asiatic Indians. ( Change in wonts ) MANAGEMENT OF TYPE 2 DIABETES The corner rock for diabetes direction still lies in diet and exercising [ 11 ] . There is besides a easy spread outing list of drugs being used to handle type 2 diabetes, all of which act through one of the tracts of import in diabetes pathophysiology. However, neither alterations in lifestyle nor the usage of medicine are sufficient to bring around diabetes, although both intercessions can detain the patterned advance of disease. [ 12 ] There is hence an pressing demand to develop new medicines or schemes to counter the immense addition in instances expected in the hereafter. Since the direction of type 2 diabetes with either lifestyle alterations, medicine or both, is more effectual when started at an early phase, bettering the techniques for early diagnosing and the chances for early intercession will greatly better the effects of current ways of pull offing type 2 diabetes. IMPLICATIONS FOR PREVENTION AND TREATMENT Familial Screening for Prediction and Prevention The effectivity of current type 2 diabetes direction is greatly improved when it is started at an early phase of the disease. If familial testing could be used to foretell type 2 diabetes, preventative steps could be taken and diabetes could potentially be managed more easy. However, the discrepancies associated with type 2 diabetes that have been identified so far merely explicate a little per centum of the entire familial fluctuation that is thought to be present [ 13-14 ] . It is hence non yet possible to execute accurate prognostic familial testing but, in the close hereafter, research should supply more penetration into the chances for such testing. Common discrepancies in type 2 diabetes cistrons associating to cell rhythm events and programmed cell death, and stand foring different allelomorphs than those associated to type 2 diabetes, are besides associated with assorted malignant neoplastic diseases. [ 4 ] . ( This above artic le from mention 4 ) In the survey by Leitzmann M F, et Al, revealed that diabetes was reciprocally associated with early phase prostate malignant neoplastic disease but it showed no relation with aggressive prostate malignant neoplastic disease. But there was an association between diabetes and aggressive prostate malignant neoplastic disease in the subgroup of work forces with a low BMI. [ 15 ] Both a high proportion of organic structure fat and a predomination of cardinal fleshiness are associated with insulin opposition. A high proportion of Asiatic people have both these features, and might besides hold pancreatic ?-cell secretory defects. [ 16 ] Diabetess and other complications because of diabetes A epidemiological survey estimated the prevalence of anaemia to be 12.3 % in persons with type 2 diabetes mellitus, above the age of 40 old ages ; no gender differences were observed. Persons with anaemia were 1.80 times more likely to develop diabetic retinopathy than persons with no anaemia. In work forces, the hazard of developing diabetic retinopathy increased to 2.05 times. A salient determination was the association between the continuance of diabetes and the prevalence of anaemia. Persons with continuance of diabetes of more than 5 old ages have 1.56 times higher hazard of developing anaemia than those with diabetes for less than 5 old ages. These observations suggest that anemia rating should be considered in the everyday direction of individuals with diabetes and should be treated to minimise the hazard of microvascular complications such as nephropathy and retinopathy. ( Anemia and Diabetic Retinopathy in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Padmaja Kumari Rani ) T2DM Is a Familial Disease: Classical Evidence The spectrum of T2DM prevalence in different cultural groups The prevalence of T2DM varies widely among populations, but the disease prevalence varies well among cultural groups that portion a similar environment supports the thought that familial factors contribute to disease sensitivity. Familial collection: Other than cistrons, households portion environments, civilization and wonts, yet familial collection of the disease is another beginning of grounds for a familial part to the disease. Twin surveies:Multiple surveies of duplicate harmony rates have been undertaken in T2DM. Estimates for harmony rates have ranged from 0.29 to 1.00 in monozygotic ( MZ ) twins, while in dizygous ( DZ ) twins the scope was 0.10-0.43. In malice of several cautions in duplicate surveies, the high harmony in MZ twins and the 50 % autumn in DZ twins provides compelling grounds for a familial constituent of T2DM. Heritability of intermediate phenotypes:Insulin sensitiveness and insulin secernment deteriorate in analogue in most human T2DM. Oxidative Metabolism and the Pancreatic ?-Cell Insulin secernment by the pancreatic ?-cell is modulated by multiple stimulations. Oxidative mitochondrial metamorphosis and adenosine triphosphate ( ATP ) coevals is indispensable to glucose stirred insulin secernment. The increased ratio of ATP to adenosine diphosphate ( ADP ) in the ?-cell triggers a series of events: suppression of the cell s ATP/ADP-regulated K channel ( KATP, encoded by cistrons KCNJ11 and ABCC8 ) , plasma membrane depolarisation, gap of a voltage-gated Ca channel, Ca inflow, and conveyance and binding of insulin granules to the cell surface [ 17 ] . The ATP/ADP ratio is in bend altered by UCP2, an built-in mitochondrial membrane protein that permits protons to leak across the mitochondrial inner membrane, therefore decoupling of glucose oxidative metamorphosis from ATP production. By diminishing the sum of ATP generated from glucose, UCP2 look negatively regulates glucose-stimulated insulin secernment. Over-expression of UCP2 in ?-cells in vitro lessenings glu cose-stimulated insulin secernment [ 18 ] . Glucose homeostasis:the cardinal nervous system. Degrees of glucose in the blood are regulated by a complex interplay between the visual aspect of glucose from both enteric soaking up and hepatic production and its disappearing through insulin-dependent and insulin independent glucose consumption in a assortment of tissues. After the nightlong fast, glucose is mostly produced by animal starch dislocation and gluconeogenesis. About 80 % of this glucose released by liver is metabolized independent of insulin by encephalon and other insulin-independent tissues ( intestine, ruddy cells ) . The median hypothalamus, a major planimeter of nutritionary and hormonal signals, plays a polar function non merely in the ordinance of energy balance but besides in the transition of liver glucose end product. The ?-Cell and Type 2 Diabetess Damage of insulin secernment from pancreatic ?-cell is besides a major constituent of T2DM pathogenesis. Analysis of mutants involved in six different adulthood onset diabetes of the immature ( MODY ) cistrons have revealed the of import function of written text factors in the insulin secernment. Many mechanisms lending to T2DM may trip ?-cell programmed cell death and decreased ?-cell mass or ability to counterbalance for insulin opposition [ 19 ] Cost of diabetes in India. Figure 1-Expenditure incurred by urban and rural topics in relation to the figure of complications. The x-axis shows the prevalence of complications, and the y-axis shows the outgo incurred in Indian Rs. In a survey Ramachandran A et Al, [ 20 ] indicated that the economic load of diabetes care on households in developing states is lifting quickly, even after accounting for the rising prices. The highest addition in per centum of family income devoted to diabetes attention was in the lowest economic group ( 34 % of income in 1998 vs. 24.5 % in 2005 ) . There was a important betterment in urban topics in medical reimbursement from 2 % ( 1998 ) to 21.3 % ( 2005 ) . So the survey concludes that Urban and rural diabetic topics spend a big per centum of income on diabetes direction. The economic load on urban households in developing states is lifting, and the entire direct cost has doubled from 1998 to 2005. [ 20 ] High Prevalence of Diabetes and Cardiovascular Risk Factors Associated With Urbanization in India This survey studies alterations in diabetes prevalence based on population studies in Southern India. The prevalence of diabetes in the metropolis and the town was similar. IGT decreased in all countries, most markedly in the metropolis, accompaniment with an addition in diabetes. High prevalence of diabetes in the metropolis and the town and a rapid addition in the PUVs could mostly be due to urbanisation. Urbanization in India is expected to make 46 % by 2030 ( WHO Demographic tendencies ) ; hence, in the hereafter a larger part to the diabetic population would be from rural countries. The most unexpected findings in the survey were the pronounced addition in prevalence of diabetes in the PUVs and a crisp decrease in IGT in all countries. One of the restrictions was that comparings were made of surveies done in different PUV locations. Therefore, temporal alterations and geographic differences could hold contributed to the differences. Demographic and population features of the sur vey populations were similar in these country [ 21 ] In a survey by Ramachandran A et Al fleshiness, female sex, parental history of type 2 diabetes, and pubertal age appeared to be strongly associated with the disease in Asiatic kids. Unlike in the kids with type 1 diabetes who had acute oncoming of the disease with terrible symptoms and ketoacidurias, thin organic structure weight, and deficiency of familial collection, the type 2 diabetic kids showed characteristics similar to authoritative grownup onset type 2 diabetes. Obesity was present in lone half of the probands seen by them. Insulin opposition is a common characteristic even in nonobese Asian-Indian topics. Type 2 diabetes in kids is an entity that needs to be recognized and looked for, particularly in corpulent kids of diabetic parents in India. Asymptomatic nature may detain the diagnosing in many as it normally does in grownup type 2 diabetic topics. [ 22 ] Treatment of T2DM A survey by Knowler WC, et Al revealed that Lifestyle alterations and intervention with Glucophage both have reduced the incidence of diabetes in individuals at high hazard. It besides stated that lifestyle intercession was more effectual than Glucophage. [ 12 ] In the farther surveies by Molitch M E, et Al, showed the incidence of diabetes was reduced by 58 % with the lifestyle intercession and by 31 % with Glucophage, compared with placebo. These effects were shown to be similar in work forces and adult females, and in all

History of the Picts Tribe of Scotland

History of the Picts Tribe of Scotland The Picts were an amalgam of tribes who lived in the eastern and northeastern regions of  Scotland during the ancient and early medieval period, merging into other peoples around the tenth century. Origins The origins of the Picts are hotly are disputed: one theory claims they were formed of tribes who predated the arrival of the Celts in  Britain, but other analysts suggest that they may have been a branch of the Celts. The coalescence of the tribes into the Picts may well have been a reaction to the Roman occupation of Britain. Language is equally controversial, as there’s no agreement on whether they spoke a variant of Celtic or something older. Their first written mention was by the Roman orator Eumenius in 297 CE, who mentioned them attacking Hadrian’s Wall. The differences between Picts and Britons are also disputed, with some works highlighting their similarities, others their differences; however, by the eighth century, the two were thought to be different from their neighbors. Pictland and Scotland The Picts and  Ã¢â‚¬â€¹Romans had a relationship of frequent warfare, and this didn’t change much with their neighbors after the Romans withdrew from Britain. By the seventh century, the Pictish tribes had merged together into a region named, by others, as ‘Pictland’, albeit with a varying number of sub-kingdoms. They sometimes conquered and ruled neighboring kingdoms, such as Dl Riada. During this period a sense of ‘Pictishness’ may have emerged among the people, a sense that they were different from their older neighbors that werent there before. By this stage Christianity had reached the Picts and conversions had occurred; there was a monastery at Portmahomack in Tarbat during the seventh to early ninth centuries. In 843 the King of the Scots, Cà naed mac Ailpà n (Kenneth I MacAlpin), also became King of the Picts, and shortly after the two regions together into one kingdom called Alba, from which Scotland developed. The peoples of these land s merged together to become Scots. Painted People and Art It is not known what the Picts called themselves. Instead, there is a name which may be derived from the Latin picti, which means ‘painted’. Other pieces of evidence, like the Irish name for the Picts, ‘Cruithne’, which also means ‘painted’ leads us to believe that the Picts practiced body painting, if not actual tattooing. The Picts had a distinct artistic style that remains in carvings and metalwork. Professor Martin Carver has been quoted in The Independent as saying: â€Å"They were the most extraordinary artists. They could draw a wolf, a salmon, an eagle on a piece of stone with a single line and produce a beautiful naturalistic drawing. Nothing as good as this is found between Portmahomack and Rome. Even the Anglo-Saxons didnt do stone-carving, as well as the Picts, did. Not until the post-Renaissance were people able to get across the character of animals just like that.†

Critical Business Ethics In Global Workplace Human Relations Coursework - 1

Critical Business Ethics In Global Workplace Human Relations - Coursework Example d develop ethical principles and guidelines for their employees, where ethics involve the standards on what is right and what is wrong conduct (Renz 2010). However, in the global setting it is more complex to decide what is good or what bad conduct is. In actuality, it is a firm’s social responsibility that comes into debate at this juncture. Over the past decade, there have been numerous ideas presented about the appropriate mode of ethical conduct in global business firms in a global setting. Immense interest in topics such as improper treatment of workers, faulty products that lead to consumer endangerment or inconvenience damage to the environment, as well as ethical conduct issues among countries, organizations, and individuals. However, the heightened sensitivity in the matter and the increasing global competition has created quite the difficult management situation for firms all over the globe. On the other hand, globally active firms, now more than ever, must devise strategies that will ensure their organizations’ are not in the crossfire arising from the increasing focus on ethical conduct. Additionally, firms must develop strategies that carry out additional costs arising as a result of implementation of global ethical standards. The purpose of this paper is to discuss in detail the ethical behavior of firms, especially those that are active globally. The paper unfolds as three sections: First, introduction to the matter in hand. Later, a discussion of the various ethical frameworks in relation to the Credit Suisse case. In the third and final section, a conclusion and personal comments regarding the matters discussed. Ethics can be defined simply as the guiding principles that assist us determine what is right and what is wrong. These guiding principles are the parameters by which the business organizations operate. Ethical behavior implies that individuals behave in the manner acceptable by the organization and society as a whole (Bopp & Smith

Why does knowledge of different generic approaches to strategy matter Essay - 1

Why does knowledge of different generic approaches to strategy matter What implications does this have for our understanding of the shrm field - Essay Example e understood the strategic role that the human resources can undertake in equipping firms with competitive advantage and therefore contributing to the improvements in performance. As Lengnick – Hall et al. (2009) indicate, SHRM has been highly emphasized within the context of integrating strategic initiatives on the Human Resources with the strategic posture of firms. This paper focuses on two fundamental constructs; the first one is the establishment of the positive relationship between knowledge of generic strategies and understanding the strategic initiatives and the second one is the link between generic approaches to strategies and SHRM. Conceptualizing and evaluating business and organizational strategies is a common perspective that scholars and practitioners undertake in their attempt to understand the competitive position of the firms as well as the forces that interact in the strategy decision making and formulation (†¦..). Whittington (2001) argues that it is imperative to have certain knowledge on strategies as it enables the better understanding of the strategic choices that organizations often make. O’ Farrell et al. (2006) further claim that knowledge on strategies actually influences organizational performance for three reasons; first, understanding strategies implies understanding of the context in which strategizing can take place, second, understanding strategies suggests that management has a clear view of the different forces that can have an impact on the strategic level of firms and third, understanding strategies increases the capabilities and skills of management towards strategic dec ision making. The Generic approaches to strategy are viewed by Whittington (2001) as four fundamental ‘movements’ which reflect different schools of thought regarding the strategic design, implementation and execution on the part of firms. The author distinguishes the generic approaches to the following perspectives: the classical, the evolutionary,

Finally this report concludes with FedEx core competences to create opportunities in new arenas. They are innovation, loyalty, technology and communication, speed and efficiency. Introduction: This work is done to fulfil the requirements for the MSc module International management under the observation of tutor Mr.Robert. Our tutor gave us five options and asked us to choose one. I was really interested in analysing strategic capabilities and core competences. So I have chosen the topic three that is Analysing the strategic capability of an organisation of my choice and Suggesting ways in which the organisation might use its core competences to create opportunities in new arenas. Since my husband is working in FedEx and it is a multinational company I started doing analysis on this company. I have chosen this topic because in todays hypercompetitive business world the competition is direct and aggressive. Competitive advantages are often imitative. So firms should analyze their internal resources, capabilities and external environment to expertise core competences. They are the strong points that a firm extremely does well in contrast with competitor. The core competences are the capabilities which should be rare, costly to imitate and non- substitutable. Strategic capability is the ability of a company to sustain and to achieve long term goals. Strategic capabilities are the abilities to perform at the level required to survive and prosper, and includes resources and competence (Johnson et al.2006). Research questions: This project report will analyze what are the strategic capabilities Of FedEx and how to use its core competences to create opportunities in new arenas? This question is sub divided as what is strategy? What are capabilities? What is core competence? What is the SWOT analysis for FedEx Corporation? Research objectives: This project report will fulfill the following research objectives. To identify the strategic capabilities of FedEx based on SWOT analysis and to describe how to use its core competence to create opportunities in new arenas. Company profile: FedEx is a multinational company which represents the widest range of supply chain, transportation and business related information services. FedEx was started as Federal Express Corporation in 1971, by 28-year-old Frederick W. Smith. Smith, a former Marine pilot identified tremendous difficulty in getting packages and other airfreight delivered within one to two days while operating his new firm. This problem driven him to do the required research for resolving the ineffective delivery system. Thus, the idea for Federal Express was born: a company that transformed global business practices and now defines promptness and trustworthiness. The corporation was created in 1998 as FDX Corporation and became FedEx Corporation in January 2000. FedEx motivates its more than 290,000 employees and contractors to remain unconditionally, absolutely committed on safety, on ethical standards and professional standards for the needs of their customers and communities. It provides services to more t han 220 countries and territories, including every address in the United States. FORTUNE magazine declared that FedEx has ranked No. 13 among Worlds Most Admired Companies 2010. This was based on input from executives, directors and financial analysts worldwide. FedEx Corporation delivers strategic path and combined financial tasks for the operating companies that compete jointly under the FedEx name worldwide: FedEx Express, FedEx Ground, FedEx Freight, FedEx Office, FedEx Custom Critical, FedEx Trade Networks, FedEx Supply Chain and FedEx Services. FedEx Corporation has visibly outlined goals and strategies for the future. Headquarters for FedEx is Memphis, Tennessee, USA (FedEx, n.d) Vision and mission: The complete history of FedEx Company is based on a particular vision: to make it possible for people and businesses to connect and collaborate with each other, no matter where they are in the world. FedEx puts its people first because they are their most important assets through which they achieve their business goals. The Corporate philosophy is briefly stated as people-service-profit. The FedEx brand is based on speed and efficiency. Customer necessities will be met in the highest quality mode suitable to each market segment served. FedEx will endeavor to develop mutually fulfilling relationships with its employees, allies and suppliers. Safety will be the first concern in all actions. (FedEx, 2010) Values: People: They value their people and promote diversity in their workplace and in their way of thinking. Corporate performance: FedEx was started as Federal Express Corporation in 1971. In 1975 it gained $43.5 million in sales. In 1985 FedEx had chosen an important step to expand its services to Europe by opening a European hub at the Brussels airport. Due to this act Revenue reached $2 billion in 1985. In 1994 FedEx was the first international express cargo carrier to receive system-wide ISO 9001 certification. FedEx is holding the assurance of its customers through its logistical capabilities, intensifying the carrying capacity of its fleet of over 675 fuel-efficient aircraft and 70,000 vehicles. Revenues have continued its decline that began at the end of 2008. Since 2008, total revenue has decreased by $3.2 billion amount due to less consumer demand brought forth by the recession. FedEx has increased their prices based on increase in demand, improving operating margin to 5.8%, more than the pre-recessionary level of 5.5%. Revenue for 2010 was $34.73 billion, down from 2009s $35,497 billion. Revenues decreased 2% during 2010 primarily due to profit decreases at FedEx Express and the FedEx Freight LTL Group as a result of continued competitive pricing environment. (FedEx, 2010) Key competitors: The main competitor for FedEx in US- market is UPS.UPS is the first largest package delivery company in U.S. FedEx is the second largest package delivery company in U.S.UPS gives FedEx tough competition locally and globally. Other than UPS in international market DHL also giving tough competition to FedEx. They are also facing lot of competition from local companies in china, Europe and India. In Europe TNT is also one of the key competitors for FedEx. Research methodology: The research method which I used in this report is qualitative. For this I focused on management books written by authors like David Boddy, Johnson et al, John R. Schermerhorn and Tim Hannagan. I also reviewed research methods book written by Saunders et al, to understand structure of a scientific article and writing style. I reviewed scientific journals like Emerging markets and innovation: A partnership for global progress, Interconnected firms relationships as a source of a competitive advantage, Valuing real options: Insight from competitive strategy and Strategic development, SWOT analysis at the University of Warwick and Strategic Capability: A Concept and Framework for Analysis. Overall I used secondary data to analyze the strategic capabilities of FedEx to enter new arenas. The secondary data are books, scientific journals and webpages. Literature review and application: SWOT analysis: SWOT analysis brings together the internal analysis about the strengths and weaknesses of the resources within the organization and the external opportunities and threats. This analysis will help in strategic development of the organization. According to my analysis the FedEx Corporation consists of the following strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. Organizational strategic capabilities Strengths Strong brand image Strong financial position Wide range of operations Global presence Innovation Technology and communication Strong leadership Business to business Weaknesses Rising prices Labour disputes Opportunities Strategic alliance Strategic acquisitions Intensive global expansion Expansion of e-business Threats Intensive global competition Economic and political conditions Fuel price fluctuation Figure 3.4 SWOT analysis of FedEx in global business environment Strengths: Strong Brand Image: FedEx has a strong reputation by providing time-definite and reliable services from documents and small parcels up to unique freight shipments like panda shipment from US to china. According to BrandZ top 100 brands worldwide FedEx ranked 74th for 2010.The brand value for FedEx is $9.418millions during 2010, 1% less than 2009.But it is still better than 2008.This dip is due to global recession which affected US very bad and the price rise by the company (BrandZ,2010). Strong financial position: In the financial year 2006 the total assets for FedEx Corporation was $ 22,690 billion which is 11% more than previous year (FedEx Annual Report 2006).During financial years 2006 to 2010 the growth rate of total assets were 11%,5%,7%,-5% and 3% respectively. The dip during 2009 was due to global recession. Due to strong financial position it didnt loss much in global recession. Strong financial position gives confidence and backup for strong business position in the market. They improved very fast from the downturn because they enhanced to deliver even more reliability and value to the customers. This was achieved with the help of the strong financial position (FedEx annual report from 2006 to 2010). Wide range of operations: FedEx is the modern air and ground express courier service multinational company with wide range of operations like FedEx Express, FedEx Ground, FedEx Freight, FedEx Office, FedEx Custom Critical, FedEx Trade Networks, FedEx Global Supply Chain and FedEx Services. FedEx Express uses a global air-and-ground network to speed delivery of time-sensitive shipments, usually in one to two business days with the delivery time guaranteed. FedEx Ground focuses in cost-effective, small-package shipping, offering reliable business-to-business delivery or suitable residential service through FedEx home delivery and FedEx Smart Post. FedEx Freight is the provider of next- and second-day regional, less-than-truckload (LTL) freight services. FedEx Freight is known for excellent ability, reliability and on-time performance. FedEx Custom Critical offers the fastest, door-to-door same-day and next-day delivery of critical freight, valuable items and hazardous goods. FedEx Trade Networks offers FedEx global customers with end-to-end transportation and customs clearance solutions around the world. FedEx Services organizes sales, marketing, information technology, customer service, and worldwide supply chain services support for the global FedEx brand. FedEx Office (formerly FedEx Kinkos) offers access points to printing and shipping services with reliable service when and where you need it. The above wide range operations help the company to have a strong hold in international market because this kind of wide range of operations will satisfy the needs of the customers. This will make customers to be more dependable to the company. (FedEx, 2010) Global presence: FedEx is a multinational company with its wide range operations like express, ground, freight, and faster delivery service that deliver over 6.5 million packages to more than 220 countries daily. FedEx also has 684 aircraft and trips to over 375 airports worldwide. It covers US, Europe, Indian Subcontinent and Africa. It works with the theme FedEx delivers to a changing world. Its revenue over 65% is from international operations. The international operations afford FedEx the revenue growth and market position advantage. (FedEx, 2010) Innovation: FedEx has strong history of innovation installing computers in delivery vehicles, providing latest automation for mailing services and developing tracking capabilities and software. In the year 1979 it became the first shipping company to use a computer to manage packages when it launched COSMOS (Customers, Operations and Services Master Online System), a centralized computer system to manage people, packages, vehicles and weather scenarios in real time. In 1980 the company implemented DADS (Digitally Assisted Dispatch System) to coordinate on-call pickups for customers; this system allows customers to schedule pickups for the same day. In 1994, they were the first to offer package-status tracing for better customer service via fedex.com.They were Innovative using wireless technology for shipping from past 25 years with the introduction of the Digital Assisted Dispatch System (DADS).( Wikipedia, November 13,2010).To continue this FedEx established the FedEx Innovation Labs, an inform ation technology project designed to create an atmosphere of collective thinking about critical technologies such as advanced optics for scanning, robotics, social networking and more. Technology and communication: FedEx continues to explore new technology. That commitment makes the customers loyal to them. They have outstanding communication with their customers. They use tracking devices on all shipments, and customers can find out where their shipment is and at what time they are going to receive it.This is one of their significant strategic capability. FedEx has announced Sense Aware (SM) powered by FedEx, a next generation, first-of-its-kind information service that combines a GPS sensor device and a web-based collaboration platform. Innovation is one of the important aspects for a multinational company to be competitive in the dynamic international business environment. (FedEx, 2010) Strong leadership: For over past 30 years the company is being led by Mr. Frederick W. Smith. Because of his strong leadership, dedication and commitment it is one of the top 100 companies in the world. For a successful company good leadership is important. Business to business: FedEx main business depends on B to B.They have very good contract with different industries for business. This year they applied for ISO certificate to transport medical equipments. This shows how they are really focusing on B to B. Weaknesses: Rising prices: FedEx has increased their prices based on increase in demand, improving operating margin to 5.8%, more than the pre-recessionary level of 5.5%.This is not good for markets like China, Africa and India because everybody cannot afford the high price. If they follow economies of scale in markets like Asia and Africa that will have a good impact on growth rate of the company. (FedEx, 2010) Labour disputes: FedEx announced drastic cuts in pay for most of its U.S. workforce. They announced permanent 5 percent to 10 percent base salary reductions for all U.S. employees. Because of this labour dispute FedEx workers requested for Teamster representation. The Teamsters Union Founded in 1903 and represents more than 1.4 million working men and women in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. This kind of labour disputes will spoil the reputation of the company and also it affects the business which in turn will affect the customer confidence (smallcapwatch,2010) Opportunities: Strategic alliance: Strategic alliance is a new trend in international business world to achieve successes factor. FedEx should look for strong alliance in different geographical locations to have a good market share internationally. FedEx Trade Networks has established alliance in Israel with leading international freight Fritz Companies Israel. This alliance will help the company to provide shippers with expanded international ocean and air freight services. (FedEx, July 6, 2010). If they can achieve this kind of strategic alliance they will achieve their goals in international market. The strategic alliance will help them to understand the domestic market of that particular location and to act according to that. Strategic acquisitions: In global business environment you cannot just go where ever you want and open a business unit. This may lead you to failure. Strategic acquisitions are some of the important factors for international business. FedEx acquired Kinkos Inc. in February 2004. This acquisition helped FedEx in all U.S. locations to offer new or expanded FedEx shipping options for better customer accessibility. If they can do such kind of strategic acquisitions globally, they will be more successful in their business in global environment. If FedEx can acquire in different geographical locations a local transportation company with good reputation background it can be their competitive advantage. (FedEx, 2010) Intensive global expansion: If FedEx can do the same wide range of business globally which they are doing in U.S. it will have very good brand value. To achieve this FedEx should undertake intensive global expansion. All the companies which are collectively working under FedEx Corporation should do global expansion collectively for good results. Expansion of e-business: Currently FedEx is using internet for most of its business. They should keep finding online shopping companies to contract delivery of their products. Now the growth of e-commerce is very fast .Federal Express can enjoy both profit and brand name from this kind of expansion. Threats: Intensive global competition: FedEx is facing a lot of competition from UPS, DHL and from some domestic companies in different geographical locations, for example TNT from Europe. The business which they are doing is easily imitable. Because of this there is a small dip in their total revenues for past two years. Economic and political conditions: The major consideration is Economic growth prospects. For past three years due to global recession the economic growth rate is very low. Due to this the growth rate for FedEx came down to -5%. (FedEx, 2010).Next comes the political factors. To achieve competitive advantage UPS is playing Brown bailout a political trick on its key competitor FedEx. If the U.S. congress reauthorizes the Federal Aviation Administration then FedEx will face lot of labour issues which will paralyze their business. (Brownbailout, 2009) United Parcel Service Inc., whose political action committee has given more money to federal lawmakers than any other company over two decades, is a major beneficiary of legislation before the House that would reauthorize the Federal Aviation Administration. (Bloomberg, May 21, 2009) Fuel price fluctuation: The fuel price fluctuation also disturbs the business. Currently the fuel prices are not stable. If the prices are low then no problem, but if the prices increases then it will be real problem for the company. The fuel price increase will affect the annual revenue growth. Because whenever the fuel prices increase they cannot increase their shipment prices. FedEx is operating 672 aircrafts and 70,000 motorized vehicles every day; this will consume lot of fuel. If the fuel price fluctuation is too much it will affect the business. (BBC news, 20 march, 2008) Resources and competences: Analysis of resources and capabilities are very important to identify strategic capabilities of an organization. Resources are about physical assets and production facilities. Competencies are the performance of the organization in the activities like producing, marketing, delivering and supporting its services. For achieving competence, strategy is important. A strategy deal with what is to be achieved, how it is achieved and for what it is achieved. Strategy should fit between the internal strengths and external opportunities. That means the organizations opportunities should fit between organizations internal resources, capabilities and opportunities in the external environment. Strategy helps to identify the factors that develop sustainable advantage for an organization. This will be the core competence for an organization. Core competences are the activities and processes to organize resources to gain the competitive advantage for an organization. This competitive advantage will be achieved through the strategic capabilities of an organization. (David Boddy) Figure 3.7 Identifying the organizations opportunities (Source: Management: David Boddy) For multinational companies Global strategy is very important. Global strategy is helpful to expand the market of an organization outside its domestic market. The following figure explains the opportunities and outcomes of the Global strategy. Identifying International opportunities are the important aspects of international strategy. Then you have to discover the resources and capabilities to form international strategies. These can be divided into International business level strategy, Multidomestic strategy, Global strategy and transnational strategy. For the successes of these strategies an organization should look for strong strategic alliances, Acquisitions, New wholly owned subsidiary and Exporting (These are the Modes of Entry for an organization into international market). After successfully managing all these and risks the final outcome will be better performance. (Michael A et, al) FedEx threshold capabilities: Threshold capabilities are significant elements for FedEx to be competitive in business environment. These elements can be divided into tangible and intangible resources. The tangible resources of FedEx are wide range of operations, 672 aircrafts, 70,000 motorized vehicles and 10 main air express hubs. The intangible resources are 275,000 employees, reputation and intellectual capital. FedEx has 42,000 drop boxes, over 9,000 centers, and 70,000 vehicles for express, ground, freight, and advanced delivery service that deliver over 6.5 million packages to more than 220 countries daily. They are planning for global expansion at the rate of 25% every year. This strategy will increase brand value and loyal customers worldwide. (FedEx, 2010) Intangible resources are difficult to be imitated by competitors. For FedEx as mentioned in their vision and mission employees are their most important assets through which they achieve their business goals. The Corporate philosophy is briefly stated as people-service-profit. They are the important element for FedEx brand value. FedEx capabilities for competitive advantage: The unique resources are the capabilities for competitive advantage. Every business will have capabilities to achieve business goals. But the capabilities which give the organization strong market position and which are rare and cannot be imitated by others are the core competencies. The strategic capabilities transfer the core competencies into competitive advantages of an organization. The following are the capabilities for competitive advantage of FedEx. Innovation: FedEx has the first mover advantage for past 30 years because of innovation. For an organization innovation will be associated with positive changes in efficiency, productivity, quality and competitive positioning. You absolutely, positively have to innovate-if only to survive.-Fred Smith (entrepreneur, October 9, 2008) Innovation . . . is generally understood as the successful introduction of a new thing or method . . . Innovation is the embodiment, combination, or synthesis of knowledge in original, relevant, valued new products, processes, or services. (Luecke and Katz 2003) Innovation is part of the business at FedEx. It can be web services or the development of high-technology, FedEx sees innovation as a strategic business practice that is endlessly improved, developed and encouraged. Technology and communication: FedEx continues to search for new technology. This commitment keeps customers not switching to other providers. FedEx also has excellent communication with their customers. They are using latest online tracking system for all shipments, so that customers can find out where their shipment is and at what time it will reach. The FedEx brand is based on speed and efficiency. So they developed IMS tool to ensure that all transactions running on the mainframe are being processed quickly and efficiently. The new features are the result of intensive research into what their customers need and want. They are meeting the needs of customers with the latest user technologies. (IBM, 30 Jun, 2010) Loyal customers: Loyalty is created among customers based on A strong brand name, Pricing competitiveness, Product quality and service satisfaction. The building blocks of loyalty for FedEx are strong customer service, fast customs clearance, clear invoicing, reliable tracking information and quick problem handling. A loyal customer is one of the competitive advantages for FedEx who will do business with them again and happily recommend others. Corporate social responsibility: FedEx recognizes that their social responsibility is greater than the services they provide. They are dedicated to be a thoughtful representative for the environment and a caring citizen in the communities where they live and work. They are passionate about sustainably connecting people and places and improving the quality of life around the world. Philanthropy: FedEx is devoted to energetically supporting the communities they serve, through strategic investment of their people, resources and network. Their corporate resources include financial contributions, charitable shipping services and volunteer services by their team members. They have three core focus areas and meaningful ways: Emergency and Disaster Relief, Child Pedestrian Safety, and Environmental Sustainability. By doing this they will have good image in public which in turn increase the brand value. (FedEx, 2010) Environment: FedEx is dedicated to providing global network with minimized environmental impact. FedEx is mainly focusing on Fuel efficiency, using recycling material and reducing noise pollution. As part of its Fuel Sense program, FedEx uses rigorous operations and recent advancements in aircraft technology to significantly reduce emissions and fuel use for their aircrafts. They are working with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to assess their fuel use and identify potential savings. They started replacing their trucks with hybrid electric trucks and Boeing 727 aircraft with Boeing 757 which will reduce fuel consumption up to 36 percent while providing 20 percent more capacity. FedEx has started using recycling material for their packaging to minimize the environmental impact. FedEx is concerned with aircraft noise and has taken steps to reduce noise levels for more than 10 years. As part of its global environmental sustainability program, FedEx empowers its team members to mak e meaningful earth-friendly changes in the communities where they live and work. (CNBC news, Nov 15, 2010) Employees: FedEx is much concerned about the culture of service which is absolutely, positively spirit of employees. This builds customer loyalty. FedEx has been honored as one of the Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For list in 10 of the past 11 years and was named to the Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For Hall of Fame in 2005. (FedEx, 2010) Critical success factors analysis: FedEx critical success factors can be identified as speed and efficiency, innovation and global expansion. Speed and efficiency Innovation Global expansion Speed and efficiency: Speed and efficiency is one of the critical success factors for FedEx. For a global transportation company speed and efficiency is very important for competitive advantage. For FedEx this is consistently going on for more than 30 years. This is happening with the help of reliable and dedicated team work of FedEx employees. For todays changing life style, people want everything to happen very fast. For small businesses time-definite package deliveries are important for their business growth. FedEx is doing this with convenience and reliability. For FedEx speed and efficiency with consistency creating loyal customers. This speed and efficiency helped FedEx to grow globally within a short time. It also added value to the brand. Innovation: As I discussed in SWOT analysis innovation is creating first mover advantage for the company. FedEx established the FedEx Innovation Labs, an information technology project de

The article talks about animal rights

The article talks about animal rights. The writer illustrates both argument, for and against, in his article. The writer starts by explaining the meaning of animal rights, which includes no experimenting, breeding, killing animals and no zoos or using animals for entertaining. The people for animal rights argue that both human beings and adult mammals have rights because they are both ‘subjects-of-a-life’. On the other hand, the people against animal rights argue that animals don’t think, not conscious. Also animals these people argue that animals were put on earth to serve human beings. This view comes originally from the Bible, but probably reflects a basic human attitude towards other species. Christian theologians developed this idea – St Augustine taught that â€Å"by a most just ordinance of the Creator, both their [animals'] life and their death are subject to our use. † They also argue that animals don’t have souls as Christian theologi ans used to teach that only being with souls deserved ethical consideration. In addition, animals don’t behave morally and are not the members of the ‘moral community’.The arguments goes, why should human beings have obligations towards animals, if animals don't have obligations to other animals or to human beings? I agree that animals should have rights. In my opinion, animals are also like humans, they should also be given certain among of rights and respect. However, I think that the rights should be limited, as animals are not like human. They lacking in the ability to judge right or wrong and may behave immorally. Therefore, if full rights are given to animals, it may be rather ironic; imagine punishing a dog for biting someone in the court.

College Students Minds Are Getting Enough Sleep

The last thing on many college students’ minds is getting enough sleep. Many college students may not think sleep is an integral part of life, when in fact many researchers have found how truly important it is. College is a time when students are transitioning into young adulthood, with increasing amounts of personal responsibility (Brown, Soper, Buboltz , 2001). This increase in responsibility, that at one point didn’t exist because of familial support, can lead to an interference in student sleep patterns (Pilcher, Ginter, Sadowsky, 1997). It is typical for students, once leaving to college, for their sleep patterns to change. College students tend to have an irregular sleep-wake cycle in which the length of sleep is shorter on†¦show more content†¦Specifically, how does the amount of sleep obtained affect the GPA of a graduate student, when taking into account factors such as the hours spent working, as well as the hours spent studying. In addition, the go al of the research is to test whether graduate students who obtain more hours of sleep, will have a higher GPA when compared with students who obtain less sleep, when taking into account the amount of hours allocated towards studying and the amount of hours allocated towards work. Published research has indicated the importance of sleep and the academic performance of college students. It is important to explore how sleep affects the performance of college students in order to provide psychoeducational support to students who may have academic difficulties due to lack of sleep. Chapter 2 Review of Literature Many researchers have established a link between sleep and the academic success of high school and undergraduate students. Sleep deprivation, sleep patterns, as well as sleep length have been shown to affect the GPA of students in the college setting (Borisenkov, Mikhail , Perminova, Elena , Kosova,, 2010). For example, one study found that students between the ages of 11 and 23 years old, who were identified as having low achievement, had 12 minutes less sleep when compared to students identified as having high achievement (Borisenkov, Mikhail , Perminova, Elena , Kosova, 2010). Research has
